Scruples was my first oil painting. I had made the foolish mistake of using the paints without any linseed oil. So, as you can imagine, my initial experience was very taxing. This piece is my first and so far only non-representational art piece. I plan on making more in the future. The piece primarily exemplifies my feelings when it comes to evaluating moral goodness and ethical behavior. Often, I am riddled with anxiety on how to approach morally ambitious situations.

This painting portrays the Knight of Coins found on playing cards, including the infamous tarot deck. The Knight of Coins generally symbolizes an individual putting in hard work for financial gain. A dark horse is also a powerful symbol in and of itself, representing unexpected success and clandestine progress. The inspiration for this painting came to me during a time in my life when I needed financial success. In just little over a year after this painting was complete, I had bought my first car: a black sedan.

Here I am depicting an extra-terrestrial from the planet Uranus. It is noticeable that I take inspiration from Rene Laloux’s film Fantastic Planet. In this painting, the Uranian girl is experiencing her first moments of love which, just like her, is simply alien. Her large eyes are meant to convey a unique reaction from the observer. There is a stark juxtaposition between the otherworldly and familiar in this painting. You can read more about my fictional world of the Uranians in my story titled Seven Strange Tides.(It will be posted soon! Check back for updates. Find it in the My Creative Writing tab!)
